Broadway Elementary students are putting on their thinking caps—literally! 🎨🧢
Students taking state exams this week started with a blank white ball cap and turned it into a one-of-a-kind source of inspiration. Thanks to funds generously provided by the PTO, each student designed their own hat, filling it with creative designs, motivational words, and positive messages to help them stay confident and focused.
From encouraging phrases to bold, colorful artwork, these thinking caps are more than just fun—they’re a reminder for students to believe in themselves, stay calm, and do their very best.

Lexie, a talented flutist, earned 1st place at the Thursday Morning Musicales Scholarship Competition last week—standing out among 14 exceptional senior musicians from across Chemung County! This prestigious competition is open to seniors planning to continue their musical journey in college, making this achievement even more impressive.
We’re also proud of the other EHS seniors who represented our school so well: Bridget Hagan, Kyliah Gross, Ryan Drum, Lucas Alo, Mackenzie Bellinger, and Emma Moffett.

Broadway Academy sent 50 ninth-grade students to Try Trades Day today —students who expressed an interest in learning more about careers in the trades. This hands-on experience is giving them a closer look at the many pathways available right here in our region.
Thank you to the GST BOCES Career Development Council for hosting this impactful event each year and to all of the trades people for helping our students explore new opportunities for their future!

As part of their ELA learning, students explored what it means to adapt to a new home and the challenges that come with moving to a new country. To make this learning even more meaningful, they connected live with friends in Spain who shared their real-life experiences.
Through this virtual exchange, students asked thoughtful questions, gained new perspectives, and built a deeper understanding of different cultures. Experiences like this show how technology can open doors—connecting classrooms across the globe and making learning come alive in powerful ways.

The Elmira City School District has announced "give back" days for the 2025-2026 school year, providing extra time off over Memorial Day weekend due to unused emergency/snow days. In addition to Monday’s Memorial Day, schools will now also be closed on Friday, May 22 and Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
• Memorial Day Weekend Closure: The District is closed from Friday, May 22 through Tuesday, May 26, 2026, including Monday’s Memorial Day.
• Purpose: These days are utilized from unused snow days.
• Questions: For any inquiries regarding the schedule, you can contact your child’s school building teacher or principal.

Last week, 8th grade student, Cal from Ernie Davis Academy, sprang into action when a classmate began choking on a piece of ice from their drinking water. Thanks to Cal’s calm response and use of the Heimlich maneuver, that student is doing great! 🙌
Cal says he remembered seeing this life‑saving skill performed by a coach at a basketball game last year — and because he stayed calm and confident, a scary moment had a successful ending.
This is exactly what our “Be Like Ernie” values are all about at Ernie Davis Academy— living with courage, care for others, and leadership in the moment, just like the legacy of Ernie Davis inspires our school community to do every day. Huge thanks to the coaches and teachers who teach important skills and model these values — you never know when a lesson could help save a life. ❤️
