There’s something special about gathering educators and educational partners in a place where words have mattered for generations.
This year’s Elmira City School District Literacy Institute, hosted at Elmira College, brought together so many passionate educators, literacy leaders and community partners with one shared purpose: helping every student become a confident reader, writer and lifelong learner.
Here in Elmira, where Mark Twain found inspiration and wrote some of his most celebrated works, it feels especially fitting to spend summer days focused on the power of literacy.
The Literacy Institute was a tremendous success — a day filled with collaboration, learning, fresh ideas and a shared commitment to our students.

Continuing the celebration of ECSD educators recognized with the 2026 Corning Community Impact Catalyst Award!
Earlier, we shared news that Josh Teeter was selected as a recipient of the 2026 Corning Community Impact Catalyst Award. We would also like to recognize two additional ECSD educators who received this honor: Amy Balash and Benita Eldridge.
The Catalyst Award was created by Corning Incorporated to honor educators who go beyond the classroom to cultivate transformative and accessible environments where every student can thrive. Recipients are recognized for their compassion, creativity, conviction, and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of students.
Having three ECSD educators recognized with this award is a testament to the dedication, care, and positive impact our staff bring to students and families every day.

Science, creativity, and technology came together at Summer Boost at Hendy! 🌋💻
Students explored exciting chemical reactions by creating erupting volcanoes with the help of one of our amazing student helpers—a former ECSD student who has come full circle to inspire the next generation. ❤️
They also put their research and creativity to work by choosing an animal to study and creating interactive Canva projects that incorporated videos and technology to bring their learning to life.
At Summer Boost, learning doesn't stop when school is out—it comes alive through hands-on experiences, creativity, and meaningful connections. #GoExpress

Learning is in full swing at Riverside during our BOOST program! This week, our second grade students explored science through two exciting hands-on experiments. They investigated what happens to gummy bears when placed in different liquids and discovered the fascinating properties of oobleck.
These engaging activities encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and lots of smiles along the way.

Congratulations to Elmira High School Interact Club student Eve McLane on graduating from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program on July 16!
Sponsored by the Elmira Rotary Club, Eve attended the five-day leadership camp at Finger Lakes Community College, where she joined student leaders from across the region to strengthen her leadership skills and build lasting connections.
Eve will be a junior at Elmira High School this fall, and we look forward to seeing her put those leadership skills into action both in the classroom and through the Interact Club.

Don't wait—register early to make sure you're ready for the first day of practices and tryouts. All student-athletes must complete their registration through FinalForms. If you're a returning family, simply log in to update your information. New families can create an account and complete the required forms online.
Student-athletes must have a valid sports physical on file before they are eligible to participate in school athletics. The Elmira City School District is offering sports physicals in August, although students may also receive their sports physical from their own physician, nurse practitioner, or other qualified healthcare provider.
