District musicians selected to perform in state concert |
The following Elmira City School District students have been selected to perform in the New York State School Music Association Junior High Area All-State concert at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 in Broadway Middle Schools auditorium.
Elmira School Board to hold meeting on Wednesday |
The Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the EFA Community Room.
Elks Club to donate dictionaries to third-graders |
Representatives from the local Elmira Elks Lodge will distribute dictionaries to approximately 530 third-grade students at eight elementary schools in the Elmira City School District next week.
Halloween costume parades Friday |
All eight elementary schools in the Elmira City School District are hosting Halloween parades on Friday, Oct. 30.
Changes to school calendar approved |
The Board of Education has approved the following changes to the Elmira City School District calendar.
District students to rake leaves for seniors |
The Broadway Middle School Builders Club, National Junior Honor Society and Southside High School Key Club will rake leaves for senior citizens on Saturday, November 7.
EFA and SHS students hosting a night just for moms |
Students in service learning classes at EFA and Southside High School are teaming up with the Susan Komen foundation to hold a "Mom's Night Out" for breast cancer awareness month. The will be Monday, Oct. 26, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the SHS auditorium.
Elmira school board to hold meeting Wednesday |
The Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. in the EFA community room.
The Chemung County Health Department is working with all area school districts to organize vaccination clinics for the H1N1 virus. (Dates are still to be determined.) Consent forms for school clinics were sent home with students on Oct. 28 and must be returned to school by Nov. 2.

The Elmira Rotary has renewed its commitment to partner with Diven Elementary for the third year to provide the school with additional resources.
Last year, Rotarian-sponsored activities included:
Diven Elementary is considered one of the most socio-economically challenged schools in Chemung County. About 80 percent of its students are receiving free or reduced-price meals.
"It's been a joy to watch the Rotarians work with our children, said Pam Davis-Webb, Diven Principal. "The relationships and rapport they've created has helped individual students strengthen skills and entire classrooms transfer and apply the curriculum to real life. We're blessed to have such dedicated partners work with us to help our children learn, grow and become their very best."
The Elmira City School District is a tobacco-free environment.
