The pool at Elmira Free Academy will reopen for open swim sessions, pool parties and children's swimming lessons on Monday, August 2. The pool has been closed for routine maintenance and mechanical upgrades. For more information, call 735-3987.

SHS athlete signs letter of intent

Corey Hamula (seated, left), a 2010 SHS graduate, signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Sullivan Community College on July 28. Seated next to him is his father, Tom Hamula, adding his signature to the contract. Standing, left to right, are Jeff Manwaring, the Elmira City School District's Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, and Jerry Jones, the Southside High School Varsity Baseball Coach.

SHS offices still open this summer

Despite the construction underway at Southside High School, the Main Office, Guidance Office and assistant principals' offices are open for business but have been temporarily relocated to the rear of the building.

Visitors should take the entrance to the back parking lot (the Service Entrance) and park in the first parking lot. Walk up the steps on the loading dock and enter the building through the door on the right. Once in the building, there is a sign directing visitors to individual offices.

Anyone with questions should call the Main Office at 735-3202 or the Guidance Office at 735-3212.

Great books on district's summer list

The Elmira City School District's library media specialists have compiled a suggested summer reading list for students in grades Pre-K through high school. There's something for everyone on this list, which includes a wonderful variety of titles and authors! Many of the books are available at local libraries as well as bookstores. Click here to view the reading list.

Students walk for juvenile diabetes

Students at Coburn and Fassett elementary schools took part in walkathons to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. At Coburn, third through fifth-graders participated, raising $1,228.95. At Fassett, the entire school community walked to Eldridge Park and back as the culmination of a month-long effort to raise money for JDRF.

These are some of the Coburn students who participated in the walkathon.

Fassett students and Principal Brad Pollack are shown on their walk.
