Following the passing of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, on Dec. 29, 2024m President Joe Biden declared Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 as a National Day of Mourning to honor his legacy.
James Earl Carter Jr. (October 1, 1924 – December 29, 2024) was the 39th president of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981. A Southern Democrat, Carter previously served as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967. He was the longest-lived president in U.S. history and the first to reach the age of 100.
