Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' DayIndigenous Peoples’ Day honors Native Americans and their ancestors, and their contributions, while promising to educate Americans about the history of the United States and the people who lived in the area before colonial settlers arrived.

As the District closes in observation of Indigenous People's day on Monday, October 11, 2021, our students are learning about the day and why the day is recognized.

Our Elmira students are learning about Indigenous people of our area. First graders at Pine City Elementary are learning about the first people of our land. Taking inspiration from the book "“We Are Water Protectors” by Carole Lindstrome, students are reflecting together about respect for people, land and water.

A visit to The Rockwell Museum, a local museum about the American experience, will round-out their lesson as they learn ways of Iroquois people indigenous to our geography.

Lessons about culture and diversity support our work to integrate inclusion and equity into our schools. Learn more about Express Equity by clicking here.
