Water Testing

Dear Parent/Guardian,

On September 6, 2016 Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation (A.10740/S.8158) requiring all school districts and BOCES to test potable water systems for lead contamination and to take responsive actions. To implement this new law, the Department of Health and the State Education Department issued emergency regulations, titled Lead Testing In School Drinking Water - 10NYCRR Subpart 67-4, effective September 6, 2016.

The New York State Department of Health and the State Department of Education have established an action level threshold of 0.015 mg/L for lead in drinking water. Water sources that test higher must be taken out of service immediately and corrective actions taken.

1,334 water samples were taken from potable water sites in the Elmira City School District. 31 sites tested higher than the limit and were promptly remediated. We worked with our engineers and developed a Lead in Water Remediation Plan which now requires all water lines to be periodically flushed and all aerators to be cleaned or replaced on a regular schedule. Please be assured that we continue to work to make certain that the water in our schools is safe to drink.
