Veteran's Day Service Learning in First GradeEducation sparks when experiences are drawn from real-world events. This happened this week during Veteran’s Week appreciation in Elmira.

Our first graders of Fassett Elementary took a walking field trip to the local Vietnam War Museum and John W. Jones Museum in Elmira. Students learned about the military, about Veterans Day, and offered thank you letters to their local heroes. This service-learning project also included a collaboration with the Chemung County Historical Society and the Chemung County Youth Bureau which made their visit a unique experience!

It was an especially meaningful day for First grade teacher Mr. Liquori and his family as they accepted a posthumous High School Diploma on behalf of his father - a Vietnam veteran who left school early to serve our country. The diploma was presented by Superintendent Austin at the Vietnam Museum and was observed by Mr. Liquori’s first grade class. It was an amazing moment of learning.

Adding literacy to the trip, the Chemung County Youth Bureau generously purchased copies of the book Veterans: Heroes in our Neighborhood for every student participating in the service-learning project to take home.
Our students were very engaged in their learning and stepped away with an increased understanding of what it means to be a Veteran and the significance of the upcoming Veteran’s Day holiday.

Students had a chance to see several historical artifacts and also learn from local Veterans. It was a great opportunity to experience learning outside of the classroom.
