PLTW Info

PLTW is a national program forming partnerships among public schools, higher education institutions and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from the country’s educational systems.

The program offers a hands-on, project-based approach to learning that better prepares students for the rigors of college. The program incorporates math, science, English, and technology skills needed for success.

Taking PLTW courses can help students decide whether an engineering-related career is or is not right for them. In addition, students from PLTW-certified schools may, if they meet the requirements, apply for RIT college credit for those courses.

College Credit

·   Students earning an 85% grade or higher in Introduction to Engineering Design (Design & Drawing for Production in NY), Digital Electronics, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Principles of Engineering, or Civil Engineering and Architecture, and scoring 70% or higher on the college credit exam at the end of the course may register for RIT credit.

·   The decision to apply for college credit can be made after the exam has been taken and scored. The college credit portion of the exam is administered by the student’s teacher as part of the final course exam. The RIT college credit grade is based on the combined scores of Part A and Part C of the final exam not on the course grade. Therefore, the grade a student receives in the high school course may differ from the college credit grade. If a student subsequently attends RIT, the college credit grade would be counted towards his/her overall grade point average. If a student attends another university, the course credits may be transferred without the letter grade.

·   Important: Any student who successfully takes a course in the current academic year must take the exam at the end of the course and register for college credit before Dec. 31, 2006.

·   The tuition charge for each four quarter-credit course is $200 (an equivalent course taken at RIT would cost more than $2,000).

·   RIT will send a grade report at the end of the quarter in which a student registers.

·   Students who apply to colleges other than RIT may request, at no cost, that a transcript be sent to those schools. Each college and university and each academic program (including those at RIT) establishes its own policies for accepting transfer credits.

While each academic department and college at RIT decides how PLTW credits can be used by a student attending the Institute, a chart for the 2005-2006 school year provides some guidelines. It would be best to consult with an RIT college/academic department advisor to determine how the undergraduate credits could be utilized.
