FIRST GRADE MUSIC CURRICULUM


RHYTHM

Demonstrates a steady beat and is able to perform in small groups
Demonstrates various gross motor skills and defines personal space:
          Walk, run, march, skip, gallop, hop, jump, tiptoe, pause
Demonstrates accurate imitation with speech, body, and/or classroom instruments
Performs simple spontaneous improvisation
Demonstrates use of rhythmic ostinati
Discriminates between beat and rhythm
Reads and writes simple stick notation of quarter notes, rest and paired eighth notes


MELODY

Matches pitch in head voice
Sings in tune, treble clef line e to line f
Demonstrates knowledge of melodic direction
Sings a simple song
Performs simple spontaneous improvisation
Sings, reads, and writes patterns of S-M, M-R-D
Identifies simple pentatonic patterns of 2-3 notes


HARMONY

Identifies and responds to accompaniment
Demonstrates use of simple and broken bordun on pitched instruments


FORM

Demonstrates appropriate listening responses to visual and musical cues
Demonstrates knowledge of call and response, question/answer
Identifies simple forms such as "march", "lullaby"
Identifies parts of a song, including introduction
Identifies AB and ABA form (verse/refrain)
Improvises answers in question/answer format


TONE COLOR

Identifies vocal timbre: whisper, shout, talk, sing
Identifies voice as a child, man or woman
Experiments with a variety of sound sources and instruments
Demonstrates proper handling technique and mallet grip with pitched and unpitched percussion
Creates and arranges soundscapes to accompany literature, poetry or dramatizations
Identifies and names pitched and unpitched percussion instruments


EXPRESSIVE QUALITIES

Sings and speaks expressively
Identifies loud and soft
Identifies slow and fast
Demonstrates response to change: tempi, dynamics, pitch, like/unlike, meter, articulation
Uses age appropriate descriptors to describe and evaluate musical performances and compositions
Listens and sings as directed to songtales
Responds to cues of a conductor
