District phones down

All Elmira City School District phones are temporarily unavailable. Verizon is working to correct the problem. The district will notify the public when the phones are working again.

If parents need to contact schools, here are the emergency cell phone numbers they should use:

Got jeans?

Students from Alternative High, EFA and Southside High school are collecting gently worn jeans for earthquake victims in Haiti.

The schools are participating in the "Teens for Jeans" initiative, a collaboration between DoSomething.org and retailer Aeropostale. The first 100,000 pairs of jeans collected will be sent to Haiti. Aeropostale will match that donation with an additional 100,000 pairs of new jeans for the people of Haiti. Clean jeans of any size and any brand will be accepted up until Feb. 12.

Students from the Alternative High School are taking part in a project called "Pennies for Patients," sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Each classroom has a change collection container, and classes compete for weekly prizes. The school's goal is to raise $300 by the end of February. Funds raised are spent locally on blood cancer research as well as on local patient aid and services.

There's one added incentive for the students: Alternative High principal John Kohena, who prefers the clean-shaven look, both on his face and on his head, agreed that if the school met the first half of its goal, he would grow his hair out.

Kohena has stored his razor away, since about $200 has been raised so far.
