Coburn
Elementary School has been developing an integrated ARTS program.
Grades 2-5 enjoy visiting artists in residence. The
Artist/Resource person has expertise in a culture or time period being
studied in the social studies curriculum of that grade level. This
immersion of the students into the culture allows them to become
children of that culture or
time period. For example, grade three students have studied Africa
with a resident artist/cultural expert, over a period of two weeks, and
learned different dances for planting, weddings, and hunting. They
also learned about the African language, economics, costumes,
government, and games that children play in that culture.
The unit's learning is displayed for parents, peers and community in the
form of an exhibit and a dance and song festival in which students
display their authentic learning.
The aim is
to integrate science, mathematics, and language arts into the unit of
study. Our program has been funded by The ARTS Of The Southern Finger
Lakes and the New York State Council of the Arts and the Elmira City
School Districts efforts at ARTS integration. The program has been
recognized statewide as an exemplary program.
