School Counseling Pages:
The mission of the Elmira City School District is Every Student Succeeds. As school counselors in this district we support this mission by providing a comprehensive, developmentally age-appropriate and sequential school counseling program that is aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and the American School Counselor Association's National Standards for School Counseling Programs. We focus on the needs, interests and issues related to the stages of student growth through academic, career and personal/social development. In partnership with students, staff, family, community members and employers, we will prepare students to become effective learners, achieve success in school, live successful and rewarding lives, and develop into contributing members of our society.
School counselors (l-r) Sonja Jennings, Dr. Kathy Moore, Aimee Garrett and MariBeth Ewing were honored to receive the state-wide peer recognition for their outstanding elementary school program.
The Elmira School District was recently awarded the Outstanding Program Award for its elementary school counseling program by the New York State School Counselors' Association. Dr. Kathy Moore, district-wide school counselor, nominated the school counselors and Superintendent Dr. Raymond Bryant accepted the award on behalf of the district.
School counselors, formerly called guidance counselors, facilitate student development in three broad domains -- academic, career, and personal/social -- to promote and enhance the learning process. Elmira is fortunate to have excellent school counselors at all levels. However, it was the elementary-level work for which the district was honored.
The district hired four school counselors to cover its eight elementary schools in the 2007-08 school year, and they were recognized for developing an outstanding comprehensive program for grades K-5. Three of the original school counselors from that pioneer year were present at the banquet in Saratoga Springs to receive their award: Aimee Garrett, Sonja Jennings, and MariBeth Ewing.
